Budgeting for a Home Elevator in Kuwait
If you live in a multi-level house or in the process of building one, you have likely considered the benefits of a residential elevator. An elevator is both convenient and efficient, allowing you to move between the floors of your home with ease. carrying groceries, moving furniture, and transporting children and elders all becomes much easier with an elevator, but of course you must consider the cost. If you are budgeting for a home elevator/lift, there are a few things you should know before making your final decision.
Types of Elevators to Choose From
There are typically three types of elevators used in homes. You should think about your needs and requirements before considering any of the types listed below.
Traction elevators are the most common type of elevators used in homes in Kuwait. They are mostly installed in new homes and buildings during the construction stage. They can also be installed in existing homes but that requires building a new shaft throughout all floors of the house, digging a pit and adding a machine room on the roof. You can see why its better to consider adding a traction elevator while you are building the house and not after.
Traction Elevators come in two different variants, both types operate the same way using wire rope or cable system.
• Machines Room-Less (MRL): these elevators require no machine room above the elevator shaft.
• Machine Room Above (MRA): these elevators require a room on the roof above the elevator shaft to house the machine.
The price range for a traction elevator varies greatly depending on the options, features and manufacturer brand you choose. You can find elevators starting at KD3,300 from local brands or from KD 5,500 to more than 15,000 from international brands for a 3 floor house.
Platform lifts are a very popular and convenient option for existing homes. They are electric lifts that require no shaft, no machine room, and no pit to be installed, which is why they are ideal for an existing home with no provisions made for an elevator.
The price for a platform lift varies depending on the size, weight capacity and the travel height, it ranges from around KD 5,300 to 13,000. The starting point is more expensive than a traction elevator, however it will save you some money on the cost for civil works, like building the shaft, adding a machine room and digging the pit as they are all not required for this type of lift.
It’s a great solution for existing homes which is why we like it, we do however recommend considering the traction elevator if you are newly building your home.
Hydraulic lifts are the least common lifts used in homes in Kuwait. This type of elevator is powered by a fluid pump that works within a piston, and the hydraulic system moves the elevator up and down using fluid pressure. For this type of elevator, a small pit or machine room is required to house the oil or fluid pump. This pit or machine room is usually located on the lowest floor. Alternatively, a small pit can be dug underneath a home.
The price of a hydraulic lift varies depending on the load capacity, size, and travel height, it ranges from KD 4,500 to 12,000.
When choosing an elevator, you should firstly think about your requirements, consider the different types of elevators available then decide on the option that best fits your needs. If you live in a home that currently has an old elevator, you might want to consider modernizing your lift instead of replacing it, it will probably cost you less if it is a possible option for you.
